Miniature painting, as the name signifies, is an intricate colorful illumination or painting, which is smaller in size and is executed meticulously with delicate brushwork on handmade paper. Miniature paintings possess a language entirely their own. No written words can express their charm.The miniatures have a lyrical quality that enamors the mind and the soul. Most of the paintings are unique compositions on innumerable themes that are characteristic only of India.The colors used in miniatures are generally derived from natural sources usually glowing mineral, vegetable colors, precious stones, indigo, conch shells, pure gold and silver.The preparation and mixing of the colors was an elaborate process in earlier days and it took sometimes, months to get the desired color. The history of the Indian miniatures goes back to Persia .After the conquest of Hindu India by the Muslim Persians, the workshops of the painters, weavers and architects were moved down over here, thus giving birth to Miniature Art paintings in Mughal style.
After the Mughal reign, the Rajput Maharajas employed these highly skilled artists to replace their own artisans, leading to a sort of painting renaissance in northern India. The whole of Rajasthan divided into numerous princely states, patronized miniature art painting. Miniature Paintings have evolved over centuries carrying the influence of other cultures and the modern miniature painting speaks of those age-old traditions of Rajasthan.

Making of a Miniature Painting

It is not surprising that the creation of Miniature painting requires a great deal of skill, patience and imagination.

  • Initially a design is chosen and drawn onto a trace paper. Later it is copied into a rough cloth or handmade paper, using carbon sheet.
  • Human figures, animals and other components of the picture are first painted. The background is painted last to set each area's base color.
  • Next fine brushes are used to beautify the Floors, carpets, human figure with intricate detailing. This also includes techniques like shading, highlighting, washing.
  • The figures are outlined with a darker color and the jewellery is highlighted using metallic paints to give an appearance of richness.
  • Burnishing is the last stage. The miniature art painting is laid face down on a hard surface, and an agate stone is used to stroke it firmly. This gives the painting a uniform texture. Then the painting is enclosed in imported Italian flexi-glass and framed.
